I'm Leaving This Farm Town

Well, the news that I'd been waiting for finally came on July 1. I'm out of here. I got the job I wanted, in the town I wanted, at the time I wanted. And I only had to wait a month for the call-back. Whatever. The call came and I was happy to accept. There are a couple of places that will be upset to know that I'm off the market now, but I'm sure they'll get over it.

In other news, my last electric bill was a bit of a scorcher. It turns out that I'd been spoiling myself with the air conditioning and ran myself up a bill of $120 for the month of June. I shouldn't have so many problems in my new place, though. As I write this, the temperature in the Gooch is 26 degrees warmer than the spot on the coast where I am moving. I can dig it. Now if I can just find a place to live.

Well I decided to celebrate my new position and departure from the Gooch by spending the recent holiday in Carson City, Nevada. I must admit that I had a wonderful time. I spent my time with some great people and had a few drinks to boot. However, because of the high altitude (4650 feet versus 348) in Nevada, I wasn't able to put in an impressive showing. Aw, who am I kidding? I wasn't even in contention for the crown. I had a blast though.

Too many goats for my liking

On my way back home, I snapped this picture of what I'll miss the least about home. I guess I'm just not a fan of seeing trucks packed with chickens in tiny cages, truckloads of oranges and garlic, or more crates of grapes than you can shake a stick at. I think I need to be at least one step removed from that process of consuming the fruits of the Earth.

I've seen chickens wandering through residential neighborhoods, and I've seen families picking just about every kind of fruit there is. However, one thing I hadn't seen until Sunday was this -- goats in the back of a pickup. Another motorist giggled with me as I snapped off this picture with his car just out of view. He probably thought, "dang! I wish I had my camera!" Well, don't worry, man. I document."
